Graveyard Keeper 2 Tech Tree

The familiar research ladder returns, with a new talent layer and less of the grind Lazy Bear is willing to apologize for.

Tech Tree & Talents

Graveyard Keeper 2 still asks you to research before you spam benches. Lazy Bear’s 2 September 2026 Steam diary Old World — New Story is explicit: the sequel keeps the familiar Technology Tree, then adds a new talent system meant to make the grind more enjoyable. The same letter jokes that there will be less grinding this time, and hopes you can forgive them. That is the design brief. This page is the pre-launch map of what that tree already shows on screen, what the diary added, and what you should not invent before September 22, 2026.

Pair it with Getting Started for the first-week order, What’s New for the 2018 delta, and story for the rest of that diary (Milestones, the skull, the eight-year time skip).

The tabs you can already see

Store screenshots of the research UI are not a full wiki dump, but they are enough to stop guessing the menu names:

  • Character — the Grand Inquisitor sheet, not a separate hero gacha
  • Tech Tree — the research ladder this page is about
  • Inspirations — a tab exists; Lazy Bear has not published the card list
  • Quests — civic and cemetery jobs, not a Battle Pass
  • Map — The Town and the southern outskirts described in the September diary

If a streamer labels Inspirations as “the old skill books,” wait for a tooltip. We do not copy the 2018 library onto this URL.

Building nodes already on camera

The early Building branch in official shots names real nodes. Treat the spelling as canonical until a day-one patch renames them:

  • The Concept of Wood
  • Woodworking I
  • Chopping
  • The Concept of Stone
  • Simple Weapons
  • Tool Rack
  • Pottery I
  • Simple Barricades
  • Oiled wood
  • Stone Polishing
  • Brick Making

That list is a production order, not a loot table. Wood and stone concepts come before decorative fences. Simple Weapons and Simple Barricades sit on the same branch as pottery, which is why combat is a factory problem as much as a street problem. Barricades are not a separate skill tree you buy from a vendor in town.

Graveyard modules sit on the same ladder

The June 2026 Town diary is the other half of the tree. Through the Tech Tree you unlock unique Graveyard modules you can place at cemeteries. Each module is a plot of useful objects: tombs, benches, columbaries, monuments, and graves. New grave designs and decorations are promised so the yard is not a clone of 2018. Details and skull-score hygiene live on graveyard management. Do not assume every 2018 church prayer is a node here.

Autopsy work is part of that same research culture. tinyBuild’s short above is seven seconds of a Keeper at the table — flavor, not a recipe. The original game gated better corpses behind Anatomy. The sequel has not published the Anatomy branch. Until it does, treat autopsy as a confirmed activity (the short exists) and a unconfirmed node list.

Talents are new; the tree is not

The September diary splits progression in two:

  1. Technology Tree — the familiar unlock ladder (buildings, modules, production).
  2. Talent system — new, designed to make the grind you loved more enjoyable, while also reducing how much grind exists.

That is not a contradiction if talents are the “how you specialize” layer and the tree is the “what the world lets you build” layer. It is a contradiction if you expected to copy a 400-hour 2018 spreadsheet. Plan for fewer pilgrimages, not zero systems. Automation is the other anti-grind tool: zombies on semi-automatic machines in underground factories, plus the Town Workshop line at 66/75 in the store shot.

We do not have talent names. We will not print fake perks (“+12% carrot yield”). After launch this page should grow two tables: tree nodes with costs, and talents with prerequisites.

How to spend the first research week

  1. Unlock The Concept of Wood and The Concept of Stone before you decorate. Pretty fences do not cut logs.
  2. Grab Tool Rack once you are tired of dropping the shovel. The four-slot hotbar in screenshots (keys 1–4) is a belt, not a warehouse.
  3. Put Simple Barricades and Simple Weapons on the same afternoon you first see a street fight. Combat without those nodes is a trailer, not a plan.
  4. Open one farming bed in the Garden before you research Brick Making. Food and peat still feed the donkey-shaped hole in the economy even if the sequel has not published the carrot quest.
  5. Save a research dump for a Graveyard module, not a sixth furnace. The cemetery is still the brand.

What the tree is not

  • It is not a Roblox codes board.
  • It is not a shared talent loadout for online sessions. Store categories still list single-player; see preview.
  • It is not a Teleportstone grind. The September diary removed the Teleportstone on purpose and replaced long walks with Milestones between unlocked locations. Fast-travel is a map feature, not a tech node we have seen.
  • It is not a promise that every 2018 DLC branch (wine, bees, frog people) returns on day one.

Returning players should still start on What’s New. New Keepers should stay on Getting Started until the HUD labels (Garden, Graveyard, Town Workshop) feel boring. Official wording lives on devlogs. When Steam’s coming-soon flag dies, this URL keeps the same slug and gains costs.

The short at mid-page is official tinyBuild footage of an autopsy — the research fantasy in seven seconds. Watch it, then spend your first evening on wood, stone, and one barricade, not on a fake endgame tree copied from another wiki.
