Graveyard Keeper 2 Preview

A skeptical pre-launch scorecard for veterans, newcomers, and anyone allergic to hype.

Preview & Expectations

Graveyard Keeper 2 is still upcoming on September 22, 2026. There is no review embargo to quote, no Metacritic, no HowLongToBeat. A preview in this window should be a scorecard, not a star rating. This page lists what official media already proved, what players are already arguing about, and what you should verify on launch morning before you decide the sequel “fixed” or “ruined” the original.

For a hopeful first-week plan, use Getting Started. For the mechanical delta, use What’s New.

What is proven

  • Developer Lazy Bear Games, publisher tinyBuild, Steam app 4358690
  • Premium single-player purchase, Steam Cloud, achievements, full controller support
  • Platforms: PC (Steam, Epic, GOG), PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, Switch 2
  • $24.99 list, 20% Steam pre-purchase at time of writing, Sauna + platform outfit as bonuses — see pre-order
  • 3D world, fixed camera, moving sun, night lighting — July art diary
  • Town restoration, zombie factories, combat, cemetery modules — store copy plus May/June diaries
  • HUD and tech-tree labels in screenshots: Garden, Graveyard, Town Workshop, Astrologer’s Tower, Port Area, Simple Weapons, Simple Barricades, and more
  • Eleven Steam interface languages, English full audio
  • TinyBuild CEO public post: more than $1 million in pre-orders inside five days after the August date reveal

Those bullets are enough to know what genre you are buying. They are not enough to know whether the grind is kind.

Open questions (do not invent answers)

  • Exact length of the main story versus sandbox leftovers
  • Whether combat is wave-based, roaming, or quest-gated
  • Full controller glyphs on Switch 2 and Steam Deck (Deck compatibility is still unknown)
  • Whether the talking skull can be muted (the September diary confirms the skull is not Gerry, not that it has a volume slider)
  • Complete Inspirations and Character tab contents
  • How hard the red-skull inversion hits display graves
  • Day-one DLC, if any (the original grew four story DLCs over years; none are listed for the sequel yet)
  • Linux/macOS (Steam lists Windows only)

If a YouTube thumbnail promises “BEST BUILD,” it is lying until recipes exist. This wiki will not host that lie.

Player worries already on the record

Voice acting. Trailer comments on PlayStation, Xbox, and GameSpot uploads repeatedly flag the skull’s voice. That is a volume-slider issue if tinyBuild ships a toggle, and a deal-breaker if they do not. Check options before you refund-panic.

AI art rumors. PC Gamer covered Lazy Bear CTO comments: he experiments with AI models personally and said Graveyard Keeper 2 art is made by a team of about eight artists, not by those experiments. Believe or distrust that as you like; it is not a gameplay spec. Judge the Garden and Workshop screenshots, not a Twitter ratio.

Price. $24.99 before discount sits above some memories of 2018 launch pricing. The original’s free-to-keep April 2026 promo reset expectations downward. This is a sequel with combat and a city; it is not a free client.

Grind. Original fans split into “the chores are the game” and “please let me skip the tenth pilgrimage.” Automation is the developers’ answer. Whether a Town Workshop line actually deletes busywork is a launch-day test — run one crate for an hour before you write the sequel off.

Who this sequel is for

Buy on faith if you liked the original’s black comedy, you want a Town that is a map, and you are curious about factory zombies. Use the checklist so the Sauna is not wasted.

Wait for streams if combat in a management sim makes you tired, if you need Steam Deck verification, or if the skull voice already grated in a 70-second trailer.

Skip if you wanted a Roblox-style codes game, a live-service graveyard, or online sessions. Steam categories list single-player. This wiki is not going to pretend otherwise.

Launch-morning test script

  1. Confirm the build number and release date post.
  2. Open settings: subtitles, skull volume, camera sensitivity, controller.
  3. Time the first 30 minutes. If you cannot reach a grave and a bench without a cutscene wall, note it.
  4. Place one machine, assign one zombie, walk away for five minutes. If the crate is empty, automation is still a trailer.
  5. Die or flee one street fight. If barricades cannot be placed in that lane, read zombie army again after a patch, not after a refund.
  6. Come back to this page and the updates hub — we will flip facts when Steam’s “coming soon” flag dies.

A preview’s job is to keep you from paying $20 for a fantasy the store page did not sell. Graveyard Keeper 2 is selling cemetery capitalism, a 3D Town, unpaid zombie labor, and a small war. If that sentence sounds like a good Friday, pre-order. If it sounds like the original plus homework, wait for someone else’s Workshop screenshot on the 22nd.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers Keepers ask before September 22.

Is there a review score yet?

No. The game is still upcoming. Ignore any site that posts a final verdict before September 22, 2026.

Did Lazy Bear use AI for the sequel's art?

The studio's CTO told PC Gamer the game art is human. Judge screenshots yourself; this wiki is not a courtroom.

Can I refund if I hate combat?

Use Steam or console refund rules, not this wiki. Play the street-fight tutorial before you build a cathedral of towers.
